West Wight Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy
The Isle of Wight Council and the Environment Agency with consultants AECOM have developed a Coastal Strategy for the Isle of Wight coast from Freshwater to East Cowes.
The 'West Wight Coastal Strategy' underwent a 3-month period of public consultation in Summer 2016. The Final Strategy was published here in 2017, following the completion of the process of adoption by the Local Authority (Adopted January 2017) and national approval (Approved July 2017).

The ‘West Wight Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy' recommends the preferred approaches needed to reduce or adapt to future coastal flood and erosion risks for an 84km frontage of the Isle of Wight coast from Freshwater Bay to East Cowes.
This includes the towns of Yarmouth, Cowes, East Cowes, Freshwater, Totland, Colwell, Newport Harbour, and surrounding areas.
The Strategy identifies areas where defence improvements will be required, and areas where adaptation is needed. It also examines how future coastal and flood defences will need to be paid for under the current ‘partnership funding' system, which involves both public and private contributions.
The Strategy includes proposals for future Priority Schemes, and examines how these could be funded.
A Summary Report and Main Report are available, plus a series of appendices. Within the Main Report, information for each area around the coast can be found in Chapters 5 to 10. Information on future funding and the Priority Schemes is provided in Chapter 11.

Public Consultation during the development of the Strategy:
Public workshops were held in February 2015 which shaped the early development of the Strategy. The work was then developed based on the latest national guidance, leading to a Draft Strategy being published for a three-month period of public consultation in Spring 2016. The consultation began on 31st March 2016 and closed on 30th June 2016.
Thank you for your consultation comments, which were used to inform the Final Strategy.
Full details and responses to your consultation comments (with any changes arising to the documents) can be found in Appendix E of the Final Strategy.
During the 3-month consultation, two roadshow events were held (in May 2016). To view the information provided at the roadshows, please click on the link below:
